Passion Project

This term there is a passion project. This project, you can do it about whatever you want. I did mine about a book called ‘How to Win friends and influence people’ and did a presentation to the class. This is the more ‘researched version’ because the one I used to present is much shorter. I hope you like it and I forgot to publish it for so long!

The start of 2024 – what is it like?

Hello fellow blog viewers. My name is Caroline Luu, you can call me Carol for short. I am a Year 9 at Otaki College and my teacher is Whaea Emma Fothergill. This is the third week of school and a few interesting things have happened. On the first day of school, we had a sports day house competition. There was tug-of-war, relays, rob the nest water challenge, dead hang challenge and what house wins, they win points. My house, Rimu, was last but I think everybody had fun.

The subjects that Year 9s do are Humanities, Maths, Science, Health Pe (either Health or Pe) and two options. My two options that I started the year with are Creative Technology (CTG) and Digital Technology (DTG). But I didn’t really like CTG so I changed it to Cooking and I’m really enjoying it. So far, I’ve made Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancakes) and muffins but I missed out on pancakes at the start because I didn’t join earlier. For DTG, we’re learning about Photoshop and how to use it. We currently have a competition about making the best poster and our topic is about water. I think we’re going to spend a few weeks on it and then vote which one’s the best so I’m looking forward to making my poster, trying out the features and improving it as I go.

We have a project about Otaki street names and the Yr 9s are going to work with the Yr 7&8s so that’s also another cool thing to look forward to. We traced out our hands and then wrote our names on it, then we decorated it and we found out what our names meant and shared how our parents named us. I found out that my name means ‘free woman’ which is pretty cool.

Tests, we haven’t done much really but we did a spelling test and a reading pre-test. We’re having maths PATs soon and I think everyone’s doing pretty good with them. I look forward to a great 2024 because this has been a great start to the year!
