According to Kiwi Kid news, water prices in New Zealand face an increase. On July 1st of 2025, Aucklanders will have an increase of 7.2% in their water prices. They will pay about $7 more monthly for their water and wastewater services.

Even though it’s quite a significant amount, this rise was much less than an expected 25.8% rise. Watercare, the city’s water distributor company, has separated from the Auckland council and became their own organization. This now allows them to borrow money from banks directly. Watercare plans to spend about 13.8 billion NZD to fix pipes and enhance the water system to prepare for the population spiking up. The estimated population of Auckland in 2050 is 700,000. Citizens say that they’re happy to pay more money if the water services improve.

Kerrin Leoni, a councillor, says he supports the financial split. He says that in the future, they will have to learn to save water by taking shorter showers, turning off the tap while washing your hands etc.

My thoughts are: I think water prices are already increasing. We have a current rate of $1.39 per cubic meter of water (1000 litres) according to Kapiti Coast District Council. From 2024/25 we had an increase of 17.19% in water rates. Other rates have also increased. I hope nothing else increases because it will be really hard to live.
